So what does all this mean. Could it be just a metaphor of modern living?.

It has been suggested that the rhyme pokes fun at Charles I of England and his wife, Henrietta Maria of France, who required common people to house troops during his war with Spain;[1] other possible explanations include the suggestion that "Jack Sprat" was a nickname for people of short stature in the 16th and 17th century.[2]

This is an old, old nursery rhyme, it has nothing to do with modern living!

Jack would not eat fatty meat
His wife only liked fatty meat
thus between the two of them they ate it all.

It could be a metaphor for making sure that your life partner complimented you in such a way as to see that it all gets done.
