Please don't use Norton! McAfee is not brilliant either. Here you have some good and free options:

Norton is a big program and will slow down your computer noticably. It has a relatively low detection rate of about 90%. McAfee is easier to live with because it is less of a system hog but it still has a low detection rate of around 90%. AVG is very popular and is trouble free but has that same low detection rate. It is, however, a free download and in that respect is better than Norton and McAfee. If you are looking for good Internet Security, you should consider Kaspersky or BitDefender. These are priced similarly to Norton, do not slow your computer as much and have detection rates in excess of 99%. Edit: Despite what I have read in several places on this forum, I had no trouble uninstalling Norton 2006. It gave up the ghost without any kind of struggle.

Neither and both.
Norton is a system hog and will slow you down to a crawl, but there are soooooo many bells and whistles, unless you understand all the different settings you won't be more or less protected with either one.
Mcafee is just as useless as Norton, too many configurations and bells and whistles, oh and it'll slow down your system too, because they both tey to check everything you do on your computer constantly, like even opening up solitaire, both programs have to check their settings log to see if its approved, then it has to check that against the operating system log to see if its been accessed before, then it has to decide whether its okay to proceed, then it'll finally allow the program.

No your better off with a simplar solution like Computer Associates or AVG
they have an easier interface and aren't system hungry and they still do all the same stuff the "big guys" do, for about the same money or less.

actually None
I use Mc afee cos I got it free with AOL
but Norton used to slow down my computer terribly when I used that I got that free with Dell
so I know that both on their own is not enough security
use the one that gives you Joy
and make sure you use loads of free software that do an even better job than these two companies

Free is good

McAfee is less hassel overall.

I would argue that Norton is cartainly more thorough.. but McAfee is nice easy, simple to use and effective for most home software.

Norton is also a bit more system heavy compared to McAfee (i think it uses about twice as much resources as Mcafee)

but frankly if its a home pc, you dont really need either of these...

www.grisoft.com offer a free anti virus software program that updates FREE! this program is available for free until march 2007 and for home pc use it is MORE than adiquate, most people but these virus scanner things... but most the time they're fairly irrevelent (and largely wasted) on home pcs.

but its your choice...

if you really want to spend the cash go with Mcafee

i strongly recommend www.grisoft.com though.

It is "sort of" a personal thing I believe.. I HATE McAfee but not sure why.. My new computer came with 6 months free of McAfee but because I was not happy with it from previous experience, I deleted it and downloaded Norton... I have also talked to people who say Norton is disgusting so .... it is a personal thing

Norton always messes up the computer. McAfee is definitely better, but neither of their firewalls are very good, and you can get better (i.e. catches as much, slows your computer down less) antivirus for free at http://free.grisoft.com.

For my part I don't use Security as I find it mess up the computer.

I use Norton Anti-Virus
Windows XP Firewall
And Spybot

With those three, I reckon that I am as safe as I need to be.

Norton has and will be one of the best Anti-virus software which protects the system and informs u with the latest update, any time ur system is on the verge of getting infected and scans ur emails and is very efficient to scan ur system based on schedule scanning ,which u can set!

I guess Kaspersky is better than both. But you will be surprised that AOL has got its own security suite................. for FREE! And its marvellous!! You can get it from the following site:
http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter
All you need is a free AOL email ID. :-)
