After years of an all volunteer military, and the sucessfull prosecution of a war in the gulf with an all volunteer military, the new chairman of the house "ways and means" committee has promised to author a bill to return a draft. Is this a good thing?

My belief is that an all volunteer military will be stronger and more motivated since those serving want to serve. Additionally, a draft will load the military with those individuals that cannot afford or gain college admitance, and avoid the draft. Thus the lower economic classes will be again over represented, while the upper classes will avoid the military due to the stigma that a draft brings.

Please state whether you have ever served in the military or not in your answer.

There will be no draft. No draft is needed. Most Army National Combat brigades are sitting at the house and could be used if the USA ever got serious about the conflict in Iraq. The US will not invade Iran, I'm sorry but it isn't going to happen. If the US were to invoke a draft it would take years just to prepare training locations for such a mass effort. In case you haven't noticed, many bases have been closed over the past ten years. The remaining bases are largely busting at the seams. Even National Guard camps are being used to train troops for rotations to Iraq and they don't have the space for a bunch of new recruits. I know a bunch of people on the left want a draft so they can burn draft cards and try and live the hippie days from their parents/grand parents but it isn't going to happen.

I would like to see a form of mandatory federal service. There are differences between that and the draft though, there would be no college exemptions and all citizens would have to serve in some way from 18 to 21st birthday. They would be able to work in hospitals, nursing homes, building public works, military service, just something to give back to the country in which they live. Too many people today don't feel that they owe anything to the nation that they criticise and getting all young people to contribute to the common good would help.

Yes I have served in the military but not over seas (Army). I only did my four years working as a Veterinary Technician for MWD's and service member's pets. If you are a civilian who has never served but feel a draft is needed then you might as well volunteer.

I have not served in the military, however my FIL was in the merchant marines and my brother served with the CDN army.
I am grateful to all those who are and have served. Charlie Rangel is trying to make this into class warfare - he has for 3 years now. He believes it is unfair to people of lower and middle income as they are more likely to serve. News Flash for ya Charlie - there is nothing unfair about something people do voluntarily

No draft. We served with the unwilling during the Viet Nam conflict and they did more harm than good. Infantry 1-tour, 14 months in combat.

I think a draft is needed so that America can continue acting as the World's Police Force. Reducing the number of Arab terrorists is worthwhile, even though they've hidden the Weapons of Mass Destruction really well.

Never been in the Forces. Except on ANZAC Day.

YES , YOU ARE RIGHT. BUT I BELIEVE THAT DRAFT WILL TAKE SOME USELESS YOUNG CITIZENS OFF THE STREETS, EDUCATE THEM ABOUT MEANING OF LIFE AND MAKE GOOD CITIZENS OUT OF THEM. IT WILL ALSO RELIEVE SOME PRESSURE OFF OF VOLUNTARY PERSONNEL SO THAT THEY WON'T HAVE TO GO BACK TO WAR THREE OR FOUR TIMES DURING THEIR SERVICE GIG.
NO I DID NOT SERVE IN THE MILITARY, EVEN THOUGH I WANTED TO. BUT WHEN THE GOVERNMENT INTRODUCED THE LOTTERY FOR DRAFT BACK IN THE 70'S, MY NUMBER WAS 360 OUT OF 365 POSSIBLE. MY DRAFT BOARD ADVISER TOLD ME THAT I WOULD NOT BE DRAFTED BECAUSE OF MY HIGH LOTTERY NUMBER, AND HE ADVISED ME TO GO AND START MY LIFE ACCORDING TO MY PLANS ( WITHOUT FEAR OF GETTING DRAFTED), SO I WENT AND GOT MARRIED. I WAS 21 AT THAT TIME AND SHORTLY WILL BE CELEBRATING MY 34-TH ANNIVERSARY.
ANY WAY I THINK THAT DRAFT SHOULD BE REINSTATED AND EVERY YOUNG PERSON WHO IS 18 YEARS OLD SHOULD SERVE IN THE MILITARY WEATHER THERE IS WAR OR TIME OF PEACE.

Eventually, because the military is spreading itself awfully thin throughout the world. You know it is bad, when they have to activate National Guard units from around the country.

I agree with you, even though I have neer been in the military.

What is on Rangel's mind is anyone's guess
