My son's always coming home with "Dumb Blonde Jokes" and I always tell him, I dont like hearing them, being that I'm blonde, and he tells them to me anyway! And I always laugh, just for him! I do believe "Marilyn Monroe" started the whole "Dumb-Blonde" thing.. But, believe it or not, she was only that way on T.V., its what made her "Famous!" That and her Beauty! And well, the notorious affair with the Prez!! From there, the jokes just gradually became like the old "Polack, jokes".. Very famous! At our expense!! HaHa! NOT!!! Smie! It really doesnt' bother me, I just pretend like it does with my son, so he'll have a little more RESPECT, for me, you know.... How many Polacks does it take to change a light bulb? 100!! 99 to help hold the light bulb, and 1 to help hold the ladder! HaHa! Stupid, hoh! This was the 70s, we're talking about when they laughed at jokes, that dumb!! Oh, how times have changed, since then! Oh well, have fun getting some really ridiculous answers, and jokes!! Smile!

Actually, it comes from a satirical play that references a famous french courtesan. When she speaks, there is a pause because she is dumb with stupidity, hence, 'dumb' blonde. In reality, Scandinavian countries have some of the highest education levels and are multi-lingual. Also, many of our current 'dumb blondes' such as Paris Hilton, Lil Kim, Britney spears etc are ALL natural brunettes. Barbara Walters, martha Stewart, Hillary Clinton are all natural blondes and are far from dumb. It might also have been sour grapes to call blondes dumb as they have been considered the ideal women since the 1600s. Also, during early Hollywood, women in general played dumb roles, and blonde hair would show up well on film when camera technology wasn't so good - so film guys liked using blondes for that reason.

The dumb blonde is a stereotype typically applied to women (but may be applied to men) with blonde hair color, which achieved a degree of prominence in popular usage. Several notable actresses have been labelled "dumb blondes", Marilyn Monroe and Suzanne Somers (due to her role as Chrissy Snow on Three's Company) being perhaps two of the most notable examples. Dolly Parton is an example of a singer who used this image to her own benefit, singing songs such as "Dumb Blonde". Goldie Hawn is best known for playing a dumb blonde in several roles, including the stage persona she used on Laugh-In. Jessica Simpson is famous for her 'real life' dumb blonde persona. Paris Hilton is also considered a prominent dumb blonde judging on her many escapades that leak into the tabloids and the media. The bimbo is a similar stereotype, though a bimbo can have any hair color.

There is a common category of jokes that employ the dumb-blonde stereotype for their effect. They usually have a blonde asking the other person in the joke a very stupid question, only to give an even more stupid answer herself.

The stereotype is not helped by blonde female celebrities putting on "dumb blonde" images to gain media attention and to be seen as "cute". Women like Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton and UK Big Brother stars Chantelle Houghton and Helen Adams have done this. Often, the women who play up to the stereotype are not actually stupid and are not natural blondes either.

One possible reason is that babies are born with fair hair, almost blonde that darkens over time so blonde may imply a childlike demeanor. Or it may come from the psycho nazi ideal of the aryan blonde with blue eyes that Hitler wanted. There are many ideas. See wikipedia on blonde jokes.

Here's a quote from Marilyn Monroe (off camera). "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that can learn to let go... things go wrong so that can appreciate them when they're right... and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together...". I think we should quit the stereotypes and focus on, or pay attention to, what is.
