That's just a manner of speaking, a colloquialism which means that it's an entirely different matter. It's a sort of slang-y way of saying it. A combination of "That's a whole other story" and "that's another story."

It's "that's a whole other story". There is no "another" in that. Saying "whole other story" or "another story" has the same meaning, people just have different preferences about which words to use. People who say "that's a whole another story" are probably mixing those options up a little and making a mistake.

i haven't ever heard it the way you typed it.....i have heard people say that, "that is a whole other story" which means that the person is telling one story but would have to tell a second one to explain why something happened. i hope this explains it a little better for you!!!!!
