I believe that every able-bodied citizen, men and women, should be required to serve their country for 2 years. It could range from working for Homeland Security to the military to working in any governmental capacity that is applicable. I believe this because I think too many young Americans have no interest in how their government is run and are woefully ignorant of the sacrifices so many Americans have made for their country. This would go a long way to making more responsible adults with a better sense of not only their country but themselves and their place in the world. In our history, the children of politicians, and even Presidents, were some of the first to enlist and go to war. This gave the American people confidence that their own sons and daughters weren't being sacrificed for the whims of the rich. Today, it's like finding a needle in a haystack to find a young person from an affluent family who has volunteered to go fight in Iraq.

No, because it would seriously degrade the effectiveness of our military forces. Having a 100% volunteer military means that every person serving in uniform is doing so by choice. They have a commitment to the cause, believe in comaraderie, believe in their cause, and are very good at what they do.

Drafting a bunch of spaghetti-spined cowards who couldn't point to the working end of an M16 would degrade the quality of our force.

Do you really want those skateboarding tattoo-infested pierced freaks that you see at anti-war rallies serving in the armed forces?

Might as well just surrender right now and institute Sharia law.

I did my duty and am a better man for it, at least that is what I think. Boot really opens your eyes, and gives you a REAL reality check. Knowing your life is in your buddies hands makes you see everything in a different light. Maybe it is what we need to insure our countries ability to remain free so we can go on with our lives. I truly understand and appreciate the effort and heroism our military people demonstrate every day.

The military draft should be reinstated only if a major war breaks out, not now.

No, we have a professional Military now. If you draft a bunch of pacifists all the will do is bring down the quality of our military.

I doubt that many are for it, but sooner, or later, it will be done. The U.S. military is spreading itself awfully thin, because they are in every HOT spot in the world acting as the WORLD POLICE.

it only lists one dem... so saying the whole party supports this is pretty funny...

and that's because he's pretty much the only one pushing it...

see...not everyone thinks the same on the dem side... but I see how you're confused coming from such a mandated party where no one can have a difference of opinion

Yes, I did my duty 45yrs ago, in the navy, and it was the best time of my life - you learn the realities of live, learn to look after youself, discipline and honour, you learn to obey, and give orders, leadership and comraderie (without mom or dad behind you)
