It is not illegal, it is overly restricted to the point where it is unlikely that any real breakthroughs will result in the USA. This is a shame. The costs and benefits should be evaluated before before any decision should be made.
To the religious: Stem cells are a gift from God, we get a better understanding of God when we understand God's gifts. We have found it is not necessary to kill children in order to study stem cells.

it was NEVER illegal, there just is no federal funding
which isn't as big a deal as it sounds as 98% of all medical devices and drugs are developed by private companies

it never was illegal , george bush just vetoed federal funding for it passed by congress. several states including california and missouri do fund this legal study. but universities recieving federal dollars cannot which is a big constraint. dan thorpe esq. manila philippines
