I would say that this is feasible. The muscles of the Swans chest , are the one's that the Swan , would use to move their wings.

Inside the wing are the long bones , which are
long and very hard (the drumstick bone). Now imagine the size of that in the Swan.

A combination of the power of those muscles , and the size and hardness of that Drumstick bone, must be like being hit by a Baseball bat !

If a baseball bat can break your arms , then why not a Swan's drumstick bone !

Incidentally , I have been butted in the knee , by a male sheep (ram) , it hurt so much , that I also believe that a Ram or Goat , could break your leg / kneecap ! The one that butted me , was only inches away from me when it began its butt......I would not stay there if one ran at me !

I don't know about swans, but we have heritage turkeys (not as big as swans) that have a 5 foot wing span and I have gotten clobbered by them before when they were panicky. THEY HURT! I've gotten some serious bruises on arms and legs from them that stayed sore for days, so I would think that, yes, a swan could break a man's arm...

According to http://druidry.org/obod/lore/animal/swan.html , a swan ~can~ break a man's arm...

"Swans are powerful birds, they bite, and their beating wings can break a man’s arm. Swans display aggression by lowering their neck, hissing, and rushing forward. They protect their territories from strangers and other swans, although they will tolerate ducks and smaller fowl."

I was born in Gravesend, Kent where there were many swans on the River Thames. Swans are VERY protective of their young, and when people attempt to get too close when feeding them they can get very aggressive. Their wing span is enormous - and I remember at least 3 cases when people were injured - one suffering a broken arm... so TRUE.

Its true. We have large birds at London Zoo that can easily break bones with their wings. We used to have a pair of Hooper Swans, and one of them floored my colleague with a wing slap to the head.

A vet once told me that they do have the strength to do this...however I've never heard of anyone who's had their arm broken by a swan!

It's quite possible, but as you say - almost unheard of.
Never mind your arm - a swan could break your leg! (much more force required)
Do as your nan says and keep a safe distance.

Yes but usually only when the swan feels threatened will it attack. If you keep away especially when nesting you have nothing to fear. The protective instinct is strong in all things but if not threatened ther's no need to invoke it.
