The DSL modem that they provided has gone bad. They will send me another one, but require me to stay with them for 12 months. If I leave, they will charge me a boatload of money. I have not been happy with their service and have been planning to switch to another provider within the next few months. In the meantime, I have no internet access at home. Is it standard practice among providers to send you faulty equipment, then suck you in for some extended period of time in order to get a replacement?

I didn't mean to imply that they intentionally sent me a faulty modem. I've had it for close to two years and it's worked OK until now. My frustration with the ISP for all of the other problems I have had with them was apparently coming out.

I've never had this problem. I'm with BT Broadband and I have never had any problems with them. Maybe it's just your Internet provider. I think that you should definitely switch though.

I have had my whole house re-wired from Comcast cable. The Internet Service Providers will try to take advantage of you if they can. I had to fight with them everyday to do this. My connection kept going out because of bad wiring outside my house and Comcast kept insisting it was me. After several phone calls, and I mean several phone calls, they finally, and slowly completed it. I then demanded to them that they should deduct charges from my account for service, since I didn't have good service.

They cut $120 off and I got free comcast for a couple of months. You just have to play a little hard ball with them. If they don't give in, then find a new service. Try using the bigger companies first. Usually if you make it known to their customer service that you are not going to give up until you get what you want, they will give in. I would never sign up for a year contract.

One thing is for sure, legally, you can sign any contract but that doesn't mean the contract will be valid in court. Meaning, if they do suck you into a contract and you end up having bad service, you would most likely to be able to break out of the contract because no contract can support bad service. Look into it...

I know it doesn't sound good, but that's how they play the game in the ISP industry.

It sounds like they want you to pay if you leave or if you stay.

You should check out the guarantees and service contracts related to your company. If you have something in writing then you can put pressure on them. If the person you talk to in the company is not helpful ask to speak to their supervisor.

You could also do a yahoo search or google the company with a couple of words related to your problem to see if others have had the same problem.

Sometimes companies want your business so badly that they will be flexible if they know you are ready to sign with a new provider. Having the info of another provider's offers and actually mentioning that you are ready to sign with another provider and mention the advantages that you will have with the new company... they may be more flexible with you. It is helpful to document who you talked to, the date etc.

Hope it works out for you!

Its business. How long have you been with them? Normally if you've signed a contract with them for 12 months which is what most ISP business do now, they should have a clause which specify what they will do in case of equipment failure.

remember, electrionic item are subject to failure for the slightest reason.
i doubt if the isp sent one out defective on purpose. i doubt if they even check those modems out prior to shipping.
maybe a power surge, power drop, or lightning got your modem.
