I must have blinked - who was Mr White?
I know he was in the beginning of the movie but what was his position?

He was the guy bankrolling Le Chiffre he was also the one who appeared when Bond was being tortured when a certain someone was shot. My guess is this was an introduction to SPECTRE aka SMERSH in the books a group that finances and supports terrorist groups around the world regardless of their goals in the form of Mr. White or that Mr. White was a member of the organization. There will be a sequel so i guess we'll find out then. Mathis is said to be in the next film as he is a member of the French secret service but maybe on the bad guy's payroll.
The first Bond film Dr. No also hinted at this shadow group.

It was absolutely brilliant! Eva Green is smart, witty and has a natural beauty that isn't so often appreciated in today's Hollywood. Daniel Craig gave a new face to the usually stale and "always a gentleman" 007. The acting was genious and special effects were first class. Since I've never read the book I didn't know the story-line of Casino Royale, so when I thougth the movie was over and they were going to live "happily ever after", I was surprised of the twist in the end. It made me anticipate the next Bond adventure even more. A new star is born!

Mr White was the head of "the Organisation" an international group who provided worldwide Banking for terrorists....

He introduced Le Shifre to the rebels right in the begining (he was only on screen for about two min). So he is Le Shifre's boss so to speak

I thought it was supposed to be his friend Mathis (I think that was his name, his friend at the casino).
