I think that if you say it you should be prepared to demonstrate, so I do carry 2 pins in my pockets in case I feel I must answer someones question with that response.
Also, when people say (especially from Leicester) "So I turned round and said.....", do they actually spin on the spot or turn to face the other way before speaking??
I mean, how rude! and how off putting for anyone else involved in the conversation!

I doubt that people would stick pins in their eyes.....but your body would release endorphins , and endomorphines (pleasure and pain-killer hormones ) , which could make pain pleasureable and bearable.......but sticking pins in your eyes , could puncture , the delicate structures of your eyes and make you blind ! Or set up secondary infections , that could also cause blindness. A bit like when you get a splinter in your finger , and it goes really sore....and you have to cut the finger open , to get the splinter out !
I believe that sticking red hot pins in people's eyes was also a form of torture......so by saying that you would rather torture yourself than do something.....emphasises the fact , that you really don't want to do that thing !

I would absolutely stick pins in my eyes if it came down to something like losing a child, for instance.
But...it is just a figure of speech to make our language more exciting than just saying, "I would never do that"...how boring! But it is overused and I think we should all try to be more original and think of new things to say like: "I would rather smear poop in my nostrils" :)

Oh is it so refreshing to get back to normality. Its great hearing phrases that have gone out of fashion because someone who works in the world of politics stated the words 'political correctness.' After that it seems most people filled thier mouths with cement or glue so as not to say anything that might not be politically correct. I am not a politician and so pleased to read others aren't.
