and how do they stereotype?

People stereotype because the human mind likes order and attempts to see patterns in disorderly situations. It is much more comfortable to have a routine and a set of instructions that allow certain outcomes than it is to challenge our own minds.
People can also become a bit lazy and not make the effort to change their outlooks. To change our outlooks would be to look far within and this can be frightening for many.
People stereotype by projecting certain traits unto others. For example: The assumption by the ignorant that women like shopping or that men like football. There is no evidence to suggest that women like shopping and that men like football. Some people like football and some people like to shop. Others do not like football and others do not like to shop. Our minds try to create differences and in those differences, we can feel separate and therefore whole or even better than others.
It makes us feel special because we aren't like "them".

Stereotyping is inevitable. But it's up to the person about about whether they judge the people off of the stereotype or whether or not they get to know the person before they judge them. I think about the stereotype of people all the time (that kid is emo, that one is punk etc.) but I try not to confirm that in my head until I really get to no them. Other people think these things, then proceed to act and judge on the stereotypes. So Stereotypes are good for finding out about the person's outside appearance and how they carry themselves, but they don't hold the true personality, for that you have to dig deeper.

I make sure I dont stereotype people even if there are qualities that are common of a certain race, religion,age or any group of people you shouldnt stereotype everyone is indivdual and different and what is true of one person isnt true of everyone who looks or dresses like them.
People do it probally because it makes it easier to split people up into groups of what they are like. Humans I guess from the beginning have always been in groups theres always a them and us mentality.

Why Do We Stereotype

They stereotype because it's much easier than doing the actual WORK to research the facts about other people. It's called intellectual laziness.

Stereo Typing is a form of prejudice - Prejudice or pre-judging occurs because people take the experiences they've had to assume the way the expect someone to behave based on what they know.

For example, if you see someone boldly displaying "Burberry" these days you assume they might be a chav. If you see someone in a pin stripe suit you might assume they're a business man.

Red-haired people = fiery tempers.
Black people = rap singers or criminals.
Jews = good with money matters.
Born Agains = happy-clappy.
Children = cute!
Royalty = admirable near-saints!
Clergy = decent folk.
Models = airheads.
Fat folk = jolly.
My point? It is a shorthand way of not having to think too much and to quickly sum up somebody or some race, quite WRONGLY!

I tend not to trust anyone now that way i can't get hurt.. I'm the first to admit i'm a **** judge of character

1st impressions are important. You have to make a snap decison whether you trust someone or not! Then you decide what catagory they fit in. You can change you mind later but is usually a very quick process and can be hard to re type them!
