I am curious if anyone has done the transition from Advertising AE to Public Relations AE? If you have any information regarding such a change in your career, etc, that would be great!

Hi, Yes been there, done that. I actually switched from ad agency to PR, then to brand managment & finally marketing consultancy!!

If you want to switch, then try to do so early in your career. Simply because you will have to start from scratch and go up as you gain the necessary experience. I personally think PR was a good move at that time because it helped enrich my experience. It is also more fun because you get to work and interact with more people.

The switching process was not that tough, because while working in advertising you get exposed to what PR is all about. It really boils down to your personality. To work in PR you must have a very outgoing personality, you should be friendly to people and willing to work late, take phone calls during weekend and be a good writer.

PR agencies recruit from ad agencies, so keep your eyes open for vacancies, online is now the best resource for finding a PR job.

Good Luck

Yes I did.
I was on the Agency side and passed to the Client side, in Public Relations, with a salary four times higher. Yet, I lost the emotion of creative and team work, I lost the emotion of preparing a campaign and finally participating of the launching. And I lost being someone by myself because I begun to represent up to the bottom the interests of the company. I no longer had the chance of "raising the baby since the beginning" and enjoying its participation in the world of Media and the response of public and the results of international creative festivals. I also lost having nice people to work with and share the rest between campaigns almost as true friends.

BUT....with the new salary I was finally able to buy my house. Thanks to the more organized and predictable work schedulle I was able to finish my university studies. As people was not as nice and sharing I found my needs to be satisfied somewhere else so for the first time I dedicated energy to form a family (and became much better). I rarely met really interesting people, things became more "socially nice" but less challenging so in time I found the energy to dedicate myself to the profession for which I studied.

The last words could be: Advertising (in the top ten) is challenging, interesting, but demands to be outstanding all the time. Public Relations (in the top ten company as well) may not give place to your personal little madness, but enables you to find your own life, which does not need to be outstanding to be "on the move". In my case, the increase in salary was not a small item.

Good luck. Go ahead. But do not let down your contacts in Advertising. In time you can return back......Ten years later...I did but as Counselor......
