Rats are so cool! I have 4 of them, 2 boys and 2 girls, the boys are sterilised. They are easy to train, feed. They are really easy to look after, although in summer you have to clean them a little more often. They do not like being picked up by the tail! Domestic rats do not have diseases, only wild rats do! Rats really do make great pets! Send me an email if you want some cool websites, too many to list here! Best of luck!

Rats really do make wonderful companion pets. They are clean and intelligent. They groom themselves and each other routinely (like a cat) and can usually be trained to use a litter box. Unlike many of the other "pocket pets" they genuinely enjoy interacting with people. They love to play, snuggle, and get attention. They have an extraordinary ability to form emotional bonds with their owners as well as with their cage mates. Rats do not need to be walked, bathed, clipped, or boarded if you take an overnight trip. They don't bark, howl in the dead of night, need vaccinations, or shed all over your house. If you took the best qualities of other pets, rolled it up into a small package, and added fur and a tail then you would have a rat.
And yet, they aren't for everyone. Even though they are not expensive to purchase, rats are by no means "disposable" pets. They require time, interaction, and upkeep. Rats who fall ill need medical attention just as does any other living creature. Before you decide to acquire your first rats take some time and learn about keeping them as pets. In doing so you will be able to make a responsible decision.

Where ever you go to purchase your rat....make sure that the eyes are clear, nose is clear, that it's not sneezing or under weight. I suggest that you go to PetSmart, all of their pets are "Vet Assured" which means they have been evaluated by a vet and have been given a clean bill of health before even being sent to the store. PetSmart also does not sell thier animals as "feeders" like most other pet shops do which means you're getting a better quality animal because they aren't mass bred for the consumption of larger animals.

I have pet "Domestic" Rats & it burns me up when people think they are like the ones in your basement. It's like saying a poodle is just like a wild wolf. How dumb they are. Pet Rats are the sweetest & cleanest & smartest of any pet rodent. Mine use a kitty litter pan in the bottom of their 4 tiered cage. They are very lovable & so much fun. The only problem you need to know going in is that they only live 2-3 years. Then it hurts real bad when they die but they are so wonderful it's the only pet for me.

a rat as a pet is cool, rats are inquisitive a bit cheeky and very intelligent. any animal you want as a pet (anything but apes and monkeys) is cool why even emperor nero had a state funeral for a pet fly. my cousin used to have a cage of rats which i thought were pets, it was only when i seen him feed his pet snake i discovered they were dinner for the snake. so as a word of caution i can tell you rats smell like a babies nappy other than that they're sort of cute.

Cracking pets! - good fun and easy to care for. They are the sort of pet that will recognise smells and sounds. Very friendly, don't bite. Males tend to be a bit more chilled out than the females and if you can pu up with their 'big balls' I'd opt for the males. They can get a bit smelly but they do love a bath and are always pleased to see you. Quite expensive initial outlay (£70ish for cage and accessories) but generally are cheap to keep.

I have 3rats and my friends breed them for a living. I personally love them and they are great pets. Everyone in my neighborhood thinks I'm crazy when I walk around with them but oh well. Who cares what other people say. If you want a rat, you get one.

rats are lovely intelligent and friendly. I have always had a couple of ratty boys. As one lot gets old and dies, I got to a rescue and get another couple. I only ever have rescue rats.
eyes of iceblue, rats only live for 2-3 years so either you are misremembering or as oone died, your parents replaced it with a new one lol.
