raleigh durham north carolina (city)
charlotte north carolina (city)
asheville, north carolina (close to major city- atlanta)
lexington, ky (city)
fayetteville, arkansas (college town- highly educated population)
athens, georgia (college town, near atlanta)
silver springs, maryland (near dc)* can take train into dc
wilmington, delaware (city, near philadelphia, baltimore, nyc)* can take train into these cities
katy, texas (near houston)
these are the only places i've been to that seem to match what you want. The northern US can be very cold weather wise, and very expensive. You're more likely to find what you want in the southern us. however, there are some GREAT places in michigan and new york state if you are willing to take a little cold. (which i'm sure you are, being from london. it's about the same latitute). if so, also try croton new york, or fordham both very close to nyc. also, the north is closer together and most likely to have a good transportation system. however, the south is more likely to be cheaper and you'll be more able to find a job

It will probably be very hard to find a city that is busy and has good transport links WITHOUT a high crime rate. There are plenty of cities that are medium sized, though, and have good schools, good communities, low crime, and good bus systems. A city where you could find work easily would probably be an university town. The universities provide a lot of work opportunities. Plus, that also leads to better school systems. Those medium sized cities also have less expensive (but still nice) living places and less traffic, which, even though youwouldn't be driving, would benefit you in the bus rides. There are plenty of nice college towns like this all over America. Yet, natural disaster wise, that will help you choose. I suggest somewhere such as north Texas or north central Florida. Good luck!

Boston is the most "European" city in the US. The job market is OK and has good school systems.
There is also a push now to lower and already low crime rate. They're hiring more police now and are increasing patrols.
I live right outside of Boston - Literally one town outside the city and love it. The city I live in is Somerville and is a hip place to live. Lots going on and it's safe. Cambridge is also a good place to live.
Rents are high but you can find good places to live if you look. I'm a landlord and actually have a 4 bedroom apt that is currently rented. The tenant's pay $1800 a month and that's a little lower than the average cost. Look on Craigs List for apts. You'll find some good things. Also, check with local human services agencies. You'll find some good rents there as well. (Go with agencies that assist European Immigrants...you'll be able to find landlords that care about the property!)

I wish there was a place like that. I live in the South. The winters are mild with barely any snow. Charleston SC has a good mix of country and city with good bus lines that can take you all over the city and some of the islands like James Island and Johns Island. The people there are quite friendly. The only disasters there are from hurricanes though.Charleston has an English atmosphere. I never heard of any gangs when I lived there.
Just a thought.

what you have described is utopia- frankly it doesn't exist. I live in a suburb outside of Boston, Massachusetts and I love it. My sisters live in Amherst, Massachusetts which is a small city/town about two hours from boston. If you don't want snow, thats not bad. You should stay away from New england, New York, Colorado, Minnesota and all those northern states. But please, for the love of God, don't go to somplace like Mississippi. A general finding is that your kids will have a much more diverse and educational experience living somewhere like New England.
The fact is that you won't be able to find a place that is tailored to all the needs you poseted above. But, as I said I live in a suburb of Boston and love it. Milton, Massachusetts. There are many similar towns. While we do get snow and cold winters, they are so much fun for kids. It means snow ball fights, making snow forts, snowmen and sledding. Coming home to hot chocolate and warming up in front of a fire. I wouldn't trade my cold snowy winters for a sunny Florida day in December. Christmas isn't Christmas without snow. Winter isn't winter without snow.
Milton's crime rate is almost non-existant. Boston, obviously, is a different story as it is a major city. All major cities have crime.
- My Parents have also lived in Chicago and Dallas with kids(not including me). They loved Chicago and hated Dallas. For the most part, the south of the US is hot hot hot hot in the summer and hot the rest of the year. There really aren't seasons.
It sounds like you just need to decide which criteria is more important to you. That will lead to you finding somewhere to live.

It's not just which city, but which part of a city. There are parts of Atlanta, Virginia Beach, or Charleston that would come fairly close to what you want. A lot depends on your job skills as well.

if you are wanting to move to the US, you need to have a job first, so, you should look for somewhere that you have a job for.
other than that, i lived in new jersey for years, and it was great.
