I like Zodron answer about The Works... I've used it on shower doors, not in the toilet. But I grew up using and leaving overnight a splash of liquid bleach around the bowl. Don't need the overnight part (and if you do, I recommend you close the door), but an hour or two should do the trick. For around the rim... I'm not sure, I have hard water too, and a cleaning lady I know, swears by a spray you buy at the dollar store called La's Totally AWESOME yellow liquid in a clean plastic bottle. I now use in on everything like she does. Counters, floors, items needing cleaning. Good luck. Just think about a better spray bottle.. the bottle is cleap and very easy to break when you are using it.

Another vote here for Harpic 100% Limescale remover. I moved south last year and was shocked by how much and how quickly the limescale builds up in the lavatories. This product is amazing and does exactly what it says on the bottle! Of course, it also works brilliantly as a regular cleaning gel too. Big thumbs up from me for that!

Assuming you mean "maintenance" and not a toilet that hasn't be cleaned in a couple of years, use straight bleach. There is nothing better for killing germs, bacteria and keeping porcelain white. Then I finish off with Lysol Gel and tank tablets for a fresh clean lasting aroma.

Lysol's product has always worked best for me at home and at the community center where I volunteer.

there is something you can get - think it is duck power brush, that has a replaceable pad on a stick that you change and flush away after each use. i like it as i think loo brushes harbour germs, and are disgusting.
i use that and regular bleach.
