Since a mature erythrocyte does not contain a nucleus (not a typical eukaryotic cell) , it is commonly referred to as a corpuscle.
In sickle cell anemia the cell takes on a sickle shape, does not carry a sufficient amount of oxygen, and may even clog up arterioles and capillaries. This is an inherited disease , more common with black people of African decent. The individual may be a "carrier" in the heterozygous condition, suffering ill effects during exertion or at high altitudes. The full blown disease occurs in the homozygous recessive condition.
A similar disease, "Coolies anemia" (spelling?) is prevalent among people decending from the Mediterranian area.

Eukaryotes are organisms with complex cells- genetic material is organized into membrane-bound nuclei. They include the animals, plants, and fungi, which are mostly multicellular, as well as the kingdom of the protists, many of which are unicellular. In contrast, other organisms such as bacteria lack nuclei and other complex cell structures, and are called prokaryotes. ..

.so is erythrocytes..Erythrocytes in mammals are anucleate when mature, meaning that they don't have a cell nucleus and thus no DNA. In comparison, the erythrocytes of nearly all other vertebrates have nuclei; the only known exception is salamanders of the Batrachoseps genus.
Mammalian erythrocytes also lose their other organelles including their mitochondria and produce energy by fermentation, via glycolysis of glucose followed by lactic acid production. Like most cell types, red cells do not have an insulin receptor and thus glucose uptake is not regulated by insulin. As a result of the lack of nucleus and organelles, the cells cannot produce new structural or repair proteins or enzymes and their lifespan is limited.
