check the cork to see if the wine has been properly turned in storage.(the cork should be visibly stained(red-or moist not just wet for whites). Smelling the cork is to ensure that it has not turned to vinegar before you taste test the first pour.

some believe you are supposed to smell the cork, but really it's just more to see if your bottle was upright or laying , you can tell by the wine that is soaked into the cork.

You are supposed to squeeze it. If the cork is really wet or really crumbly, it's probably a bad bottle.
