I think it's twice, if you have been caught it's 3 points on you license and a £50/60 fine (I think). Although, there is a 10% margin of error with speed cameras so with a 70mph limit you should be able to do up to 77 without being caught.

National Association of Chief Police Officers' Guidelines state that the margin given before a Prosecution will be commenced is the speed limit for the stretch of road concerned plus 10%, plus 2mph. Therefore if the limit is 70mph a prosecution would normally only be commenced for a speed of over 79mph.

The usual rule of thumb for speed camera's is that it is 2 flashes before you are actually caught.

Sentencing for speeding depends on the speed being driven and is usually decided with reference to the Magistrates Court Sentencing Guidlines. However, for a low level offence a fixed penalty will usually be offered, which is £60.00 fine and 3 penalty points on your licence.

From what you have said it would seem unlikely that you have anything to fear though!

According to the Sussex Safety Camera Campaign, you'll receive a notice of intended prosecution within 14 days.

The current penalty is 3 points regardless of how fast you were going, or 6 points or disqualification if convicted in a court if you were significantly over the limit.

An automatic ban is given to anyone who clocks up 12 points, or four offences, within three years.

Pleading ignorance of the speed limit won't wash - if you passed your driving test, you should know what they are. If you were doing 75 mph, you must have realised that you were over the maximum limit anyway.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but let's face it, there's no excuse for speeding and speeding does kill.

there's a leyway of 10% of the value shrink plut 3 miles in line with hour. So in a 70 shrink the digital camera is desperate at 10% of 70 ie 7 plus 3 viz on the digital camera is desperate at 80. no longer all cameras artwork on an identical time because of the fact the police flow a limited style of cameras around from website to website.

A number of people have mentioned the "10% allowance". This is to allow for speedometer error and it is needed - most car speedometers are not that accurate.

So if your speedo showed 75mph, this probably suggests you were going somewhere between about 68 and 82 mph.

You can try the excuse "I didn't realise what the speed limit was", but you'll get laughed at. It's your responsibility to know (and it's never greater than 70mph anyway).

I think it has to flash twice if not you might end up with 3 points and a 30 pound fine that will go up if you leave the payment , sorry.

i think your allowed 10% over the speeding limit so in a 70mph zone you would have to do 77mph for the speed camera to flash you, if you got flashed you must of been doing more than 77
and to say you didnt realise spped limit is a bit daft, have you passed your test.,. national spped limit is 70mph

Do you know that irreguardless of the posted speedlimit 55 MPH really does make the best fuel economy? Besides, on every Highway in the US 45 is the minimum speedlimit which keeps the truely slow out of harms way. It is harms way because speed really does kill.
