I can be bitter & twisted (that actually sounds like a good name for a band! tee hee) I would say life experience, heartbreak and disappointment, disillusionment, cruelty of the heartless, childhood torment, the angst of adulthood, my job, etc have made me this way...or maybe I choose to be this way because it gives me more to write about. The best songs come out of anger, sadness, cynicism. Happiness never has much to say. Misery needs to get out...

I should be grateful that I exist at all, but some perverse drive in me expects more. That has made me bitter and twisted.

That would be "experience."
The old sayings are numerous: "Once burned, twice shy." or "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." or "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
Most of the wisdom of human interaction involves developing a healthy distrust in the essential "goodness" of one's fellows and a doubt as to their ultimate intentions.
I am bitter and twisted, which makes me a "successful human being."
