would it cause harm to the baby, if you went out and had a great night but got quite drunk, then a week later discovered you were pregnant? could this put you at higher risk of having a miscarriage? thanks for your time in answering this for me

The begginning of a pregnancy - the first 12 weeks - is one of the most vital parts. The brain and nervous system are forming even before the heart or lungs. I only mention that because so many have said that early doesn't matter. It does. That being said, as long as this was a one time thing, it probably won't do any harm. I don't know exactly how much makes you quite drunk, but I went out in the early stages of my last pregnancy (before I knew) and had 2 margaritas and 2 shots of taquila - which is enough to get me drunk. He turned out fine. There are cases where the baby did not though. There is a group of birth defects called Fetal Alcohol Sydrom (FAS.) It is a relatively low chance 3 in a 1000, but you should tell your doctor you did drink before you knew so he can run special tests to check the baby. Here is a link about it: http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/DS/00184.html

A week is a long time. Could you have become pregnant AFTER the drinking session? What matters now is that now you are pregnant, you shouldn't do anything silly that could harm the chances of a normal birth. If you are planning to keep the baby, then it's a lifetime commitment. Stay healthy, and don't take harmful substances, this includes smoking and drinking.

If you've just learned that you're pregnant, but have had a few drinks recently, you don't be overly concerned about your baby. It's never too late to improve your child's chances at good health by cutting down on your drinking, or safer still, by not drinking at all. Developmental problems in the fetus are generally linked to excessive, chronic drinking.

This comment came from the below web site, check it out but iw ould not worry as long as its not something you plan to do during the preg.

I can't really tell you if it puts you at higher risk, but I can tell you my experience:

My best friend was quite a drinker for a period of about 6 months. One day she went in to the doctor for something really silly like the sniffles... and the doctor told her she was 5 1/2 months pregnant. Her baby was totally healthy and is now almost 3 years old.

diverse people use those issues earlier looking out they're pregnant and have healthful toddlers, yet additionally they end while they discover out!!!!! the baby would be large if she quits now, yet persevering with to apply those issues simply by fact the baby grows will heavily modify the baby's thoughts advance. the outcomes would be terrible and that i will assure you that once the baby is born they are going to be attentive to if those issues have been used for the time of the entire being pregnant. as quickly as this happens she would be in a position to not be leaving the well-being center together with her infant. Fetal alcohol syndrome is real and it will ensue, and he or she would be in a position to be sorry while she sees the outcomes she led to her damaging newborn that did not even get a decision in the difficulty. i'm hoping she quits...the baby would not need to have issues for something of it relatively is life simply by fact somebody exchange into too egocentric to understand the outcomes of fetal alcohol syndrome. as some distance simply by fact the long term use of marijuana i could say the newborn could maximum in all probability have gaining information of disabilities and conceivable specific needs. Out of the two i think of the extreme alcohol use is the greater serious one, yet i don't recommend the two.

Hi, I understand your concerns, before I knew I was pregnant with my first baby I went to a wedding and got pretty drunk, I must have been about 8 weeks preg, and my baby was fine. I spoke to my doc and he was reassuring also. Just focus on doing all you can to ensure you have a healthy pregnancy from now on. I wish you alll the best.

P.s To fenland, just ease off a bit you dont know the circumstances surrounding conception, ie how do you know she was having unprotected sex, contraception can fail you know.

I celebrated New Year and a couple of parties a week later not knowing I was only a few days pregnant and although my placenta apparently wasn't very healthy looking (doctor asked if I smoked) my son was perfect and has grown up into a healthy child.

for a start if you are having unprotected sex then you should not be drinking just in case you are pregnant. I mean, if you are TRYING for a baby then don't drink. Yes if you got drunk early in pregnancy you are risking both the foetus and the pregnancy itself.
