July 24, 2003. My wife and I both lost our fathers the same day, and their deaths were less then two hours apart. They were in separate hospitals that were about 35 miles apart. We were at my father-in-laws side when he went. He had spiked a 104 temperature, and my mother-in-law decided it was time to take him off his life support. After his death, I spoke with his minister about the funeral (My father-in-law knew he was dying, and asked me to deliver his eulogy exactly two months before) and then we headed back to my mother-in-laws house. The wife and I went to get some laundry off the line, when my brother had called my cell phone. I had my hands full and could not reach it, but he left the message that dad had passed on. It was late at night, and I wanted my wife to stay with her mother, but she felt her place was with me, so we headed up to the hospital, and arrived around 11:00 at night. When security took me to the room where my father was, my sisters and two of my brothers were already there. I remember walking in the room, seeing my father laying there dead, and, after about a minute, looked at them emotionless and said, "Please forgive me for not crying, but I just went through this three hours ago, and I am too numb to feel anything right now!" The next day it hit me what had happened, and I grieved his loss.
