C. Bannerman of Australia is the first batsman to score a century in the history of Test cricket. He scored 165 runs and retired hurt in the first Test in the history of Test Cricket against England played at Melbourne Cricket Ground from 15th to 19th March 1877. Australia won that match by 45 runs.
