Mainly the problem is I'm not sure which state's courts or paperwork I should research-- we were married in Colorado in 2003; I have lived in California since March 2006 and he has been out of the country since then; and we were both originally residents of another state before the marriage.

I've tried to learn how to file on my own, but it's been hard because I don't know where to start.

No children, and all I want out of it is OUT of it. What can I do?

Ask a free question to a lawyer by going to www.lawguru.com.
Select California as your state, since this is your home for more than 6 months. Ask about doing a no fault divorce by publication, which means you can not locate the defendant, so you run an ad in the paper of the town where he was last.

The paperwork is not that hard to do, even by yourself, since you have no children and no assets together. (like me) I found blank forms to complete from my legal aid website and just downloaded them. Filing fees will probably eat up $100 bucks or so plus the cost of the newspaper ad.

You can do it!

You file in the state in which you reside.....You can get papers off the internet, fill them out, you both must sign, file them in that county with a fee. Ususally something like $15. If there are no assets of divide, you will be given a divorce date. If that is too complicated, you can see an attorney and have him file them for you after both have signed. That will cost generally no more that $75.

Just call a California courthouse and ask for information about the divorce paperwork.

There should be someone there to help you out.

Probably find a courthouse online or in the phone book.
