I'm in kind of the same situation. My husband was common law with a woman(who abused him), for 25 years(18 years in separate bedrooms and no sex, cause she just wanted to be 'just friends'& he was too scared of her and little self esteem to leave). He worked two fulltime jobs...they lived in a dump(she had total control of the money(by the time he got home from work the money directly deposited would be gone except for the mortgage. The woman herself has had chronic migraines and rarely left the house.(she managed to work off and on whenever what he was bringing in wasn't enough).
Court orders are more than 60% of is income. They have one child who is 26(he got her pregnant at the get go in the beginning). She was awarded 2200 a month and also gets 900 disability!
We just went ahead and went on with our lives and this summer moved across the country. My husband hasn't paid her a dime since July. Now they are coming after us. If they take his license...he can't work....if he can't work...we can't pay van loan...if can't pay van loan...get the idea....while neither of us has a problem with being poor..that's no biggie...we are happy together and that is really all that matters(we are both very resourcefull and there is lots of hunting and fishing and wild food and my gardens where we moved to)

But men are screwed once this happens to them. There is no way out. Until after another generation or so off boys(and some smart girls) seeing what women are doing to men now(this goes for all the games that women are playing with their kids as well)
We are going to have generations that will get themselves a vascetemy at 18 and never co habitate with a woman.AND I WOULDN"T BLAME THEM ONE BIT!!!!It's not worth it.
Not in a million years would I ever do that to another human being. I have too much self respect. If things don't work out there should be a clean break Maybe support for a year or two while some get on their feet but that is all.I do not know how these women can look themselves in the mirror.Or look another human being in the eye. Your husband and my husband HAVE HAD THEIR RIGHTS TAKEN AWAY!!!!

About all we can do is tell everyone we come across what has happened.Warn your children. We do. Everyone who knows my husband knows that he is a good man.

Hugs to you...we are in a hopeless situation...but we are not alone...there are a lot of us!

Without knowing all the particulars, it's impossible for anyone to answer this question. Actually, you're probably only going to get a correct answer from an attorney.

Obviously he was paying "alimony" before he hooked up with you. It really isn't any of your business. It also isn't up to you to decide whether or not she is "capable of working".

Sorry, I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but when you choose to become "involved" with someone who was married before, you go into it with your "eyes wide open". If this was something you had a problem with, you shouldn't have married him in the first place.

If married for 10 years, he pays alimony for life regardless. That's why Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were arguing about the date of separation.

maybe he made her life with him miserable and he made her pay the bills and do all the work while he party-ed with his friends for years. Then he screwed her out of her share of things .Good for her. You shouldn't have married him if u didn't like him having to pay her.
