The first thing I would do, is check for spyware. Spyware will slow it down.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

depends on what you have loaded on your comp.. you may not have as much hard drive space avail , which would slow your comp due to more need to find space for files, also if your hd drive is almost full, youll need more ram to make up some of the speed, in order to increase productivity,, unless you plan to install an additional hd drive,, also,, if you want a good cleaner,, try a few heres a few sites,, try the top one first ,, alot of programmers i know use this link when checking home computers for customers,,,

Could be spyware, could be that you need to defrag could be many things. I'll just give one tip here and leave the rest up to everybody else.
Try defragen

Start
All Programs
Accessories
System Tools
Disk Defragmenter

Defragen can take as little as a few minutes to a few hours
Hope it helps

open a folder and go to tools/folder options
select view and ensure show hidden files and folders is enabled
restart in safe mode (tap F8 while booting)
Search for temp
Open Temp folders and delete all you find in them
Open Temporary Internet folders and delete all you find in them
Search for content
Open content ie5 folder and delete all you find in it.
This ensures that any leftover windows activity is cleaned up

once this is done run a spyware remover to check the registry and files installed for problems
Then run an in depth virus scan to ensure no virus is causing the problem
Once completed reboot into normal mode and test.
good luck

after performing disk clean up and defrag you can goto system config utility but typing msconfig in run, then uncheck load startup items. and after rebooting it should be faster.
