You bet. I'm 49 years old now and I started perimenopause when I was 39. My periods used to be light and only lasted 2-3 days. When the perimenopause started, I'd get "floods" as you say. Your hormones are going through some major changes as the ovaries begin to run of eggs. You can do two things. One, you can go to your MD and get prescription HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or you can grin and bear it. There is advantages to both. If you take the HRT, you stand a chance of getting breast cancer, blood clots and worst of all you might have a period the rest of your life. If you go natures way, you might be on the roller coaster emotionally, but it's only temporary (of course, I am the exception to the rule). I am finally nearing the end of this curse, my mood swings are evening out, my periods are lighter and different color (brown, old eggs turn color).

The Native American women call it "Women of the 14th moon".. There is one blue moon a year (2 full moons one month of the year) and when they reach menopause they call the 14th moon. There is a book written with the exact same title, I recommend highly.

It can be a joyful part of your life just as it can be the opposite. I've experienced both and am glad of it. I wish you the best of luck through this particular journey of your life!

My friend is going through this at the moment and my sister last year. Apparently it can be 'normal' for some women to have this. A lot of doctors are not very sympathetic either. My sister was given a hormonal coil and it cleared up within three months (after about 12 months of moaning at her GP). Now my friend has had a period for 50 days some days heavy some not so heavy. She was sent for a scan and now awaits the results. She also looks awful as she is now very anaemic. Good luck but I suggest you keep pressing your GP to get some sort of relief it it continues.

Yes, icky huh? Make sure you go and see your gynecologist for testing and suggestions. I know what it's like to go through this - sometimes it means staying at home for days, which is awful. You just have to do your best by padding up and keeping lots of extra clothes handy. Hopefully it won't last for long.
