Contrary to prior answers... all automatics have a "shifter", so there is a right way and wrong way to use it. 1) Avoid revving the engine in neutral to over 3000 rpm and shifting into reverse or drive (otherwise known as a neutral drop) - it can damage a drive shaft or transmission. 2) You wont harm an auto transmission downshifting from drive to 3, 2, or 1. But if you're doing 80 mph and shift down to 1st - you might blow the engine if it pushes the rpms into the red (7000 or so). You can find the safe speeds for each gear by manually shifting through each gear from 1 up and watching the tach (rpms) or listening to how high the engine revs if you don't have one. Most engines can handle 45 mph or so in first gear, so it's pretty hard to damage anything just downshifting reasonably to reduce speed.

Yes, it is slipping and will only get worse. It is soon going to be time for it to have a overhaul if you plan to keep the car. At 246k, you have gotten more than its average life, which tells me you have been taking care of it and giving it regular service at proper intervals......Good Job!!
