had my first bump in 50 years behind the wheel.
i fear i will be hammered for insurance now, considering my age(77)

First if this is your first accident in 50yrs you have nothing to worry about.Your rates will not change over this.Now if it becomes a habit then yes you rates will change.Congradulations on such a great driving record.

Most insurance companies are forgiving of an accident if you haven't had one in a good while. For example, my insurance doesn't raise the rates if it has been more than 6 yrs since the last "at fault" accident. I'm assuming this accident was your fault. As long as you haven't had a ticket in a few years, then you are probably not going to have an increase in rates. If they do raise you rates, I'd start looking for another company.

were you to blame? That would depend on who's at fault and your state laws. At 77 they may require you to take another driving test. You can call your insurance and ask without making a claim.

after driving 50 years without a bump i think they should give you a bonus, as far as quotes are concerned garages are ripping off the insurance companies
