Well the Internet was developed by a bunch of cool professors
The step was to think about a way of sharing information - networking - dreamt up in a series of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962. At this point a memo was a bit of paper, as two computers could not talk to each other at all.

He envisioned a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site.

The next breakthrough was also at Mass; Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on packet switching theory in July 1961

You needed to send communications using packets rather than circuits, so they connected the TX-2 computer in Mass. to the Q-32 in California with a low speed dial-up telephone line creating the first (however small) wide-area computer network ever built.

But that the circuit switched telephone system was totally inadequate for the job.

So some boffins - the RAND group had written a paper on packet switching networks for secure voice in the military in 1964. This helped set up the ARPANET network in America by the end of 1969, four host computers were connected together, and the budding Internet was off the ground.

In 1973, the U.S. Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a research program to investigate techniques and technologies for interlinking packet networks of various kinds. The objective was to develop communication protocols, which would allow networked computers to communicate transparently across multiple, linked packet networks. This was called the Internetting project and the system of networks that emerged from the research was known as the "Internet."

The US had in fact wanted to developed a military 'spy' network, a weapon...under Ronald Regan, but the internet is much bigger than they ever envisaged, and is now beyond their control.

It is perhaps the only free exchange of ideas in the world today, and you get the good, the bad and the very ugly. It is hard to censor, and unlike our press, un-edited with political bias. However, you have no idea of the source of many of the items upon it, so it is also subjective.

However you can search through every site if you learn how to phrase your questions. You can send multiples copies of letters instantly, and the computer remembers all the address details for you, it also tells you when they have been read, and when you have a reply waiting.

It allows many different forms of data, sound images, video, and words, in different languages, to be understood, and handled by the operation of a few simple software programmes.

In short it is a tool, a very powerful tool, that is easy to use, and easier still to misuse. You get back what you put into it I suppose?
