Here are Windows Firewall deficiencies:
-Inbound blocking only. Does not monitor outgoing traffic.
-No alerting
-No signature recognition of attacks (i.e. a port scan will never be identified as a port scan in the log)
-Crappy log file format (hard to read and understand for the beginner)
-Max log size is 32 meg.
-No way to copy log to another place without turning off firewall
ZoneAlarm is a good, free firewall.

Windows firewall is fine as long as you understand it. It is pretty well bullet proof against inbound threats. However if you become virus or spyware infected (say through a hostile website or email) then the windows XP firewall will not help you against subversive outbound traffic used by these viruses etc. This means you must make extra effort to keep your computer virus and spyware free (use firefox instead of internet explorer)
As an interesting footnote, Windows Vista addresses this issue in the Vista firewall.

Windows Firewall blocks all unauthorized access attempts outside your PC but it can't block a malicious program that reside in your computer and allow hackers to access your Data.
Personal firewalls blocks also these programs therefor they are supposed better then windows Firewall. If you has an anti virus software installed then risk of this kind of attack is less expected
because anti virus software also detect and delete those malicious soft wares called " Trojans ". Within an anti virus's protection you can rely on windows Firewall although an expert don't recommend this.If want to use windows firewall with anti virus protection even then i will advise you to have some knowledge about your computer's open ports and there functionality.

Here are two free firewalls, both better than Windows.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo security suite.
I don't know why you're annoyed by Norton, but all firewalls need to be configured; they all give alerts; they all use annoying pop ups to warn you whats happening. Thats what they're for.
Most of it you can ignore.
But its crazy to switch from Norton to Windows!
Thats like switching from a merc to a citroen cv!

first of all u must really trust windows...a hacker has brains to evrything...so be extremely careful at choosing the right protection...my opinion is you are tired of norton because of its popups or another problem or glitch...but nwm,the windows firewall only block weird, non windows codes...whick mean some games or files cant be downloaded...but with antivirus, you get protection for evrything and its backed up with the firewall,,,,,,,,SO chances of yo getting hit by a virus is very low....

1. Any firewall that is run on a platform from which you work is as vulnerable as is the platform you are using!
2. Only use external hardware firewalls.
3. the BEST is http://ipcop.org that runs on any older PC, as a Firewall/Router, on a 120Mhz to a 800Mhz PC. Recommend a 233 to 350 if you simply run the firewall router, and spam assassin, using 32Mb or more of RAM and a 1.2Gb, or larger, drive. If you want to run Dan's Guardian, get the 800Mhz box out.
Anyway, I run Macs and Linux pcs. They are upto 50X faster and virus free. I still run an IPCOP box!

I think it is. I've used it ever since my own subcription to Norton ended, and I've had no security problems whatsoever since using Windows Firewall.

I've had no trouble with the windows firewall at all. In the 5 monthes that I've had SP2 and this firewall installed, my machine hasn't had any spyware, adware or virus infections.
Yeah, I'd say it's fairly decent. :)
