Rats are clean, lively, personable, and make lovely pets. In our family, the longest lived was about four years old when she died. Usually they lived about 3.5. I think much depends on the quality of food, and yes, even attention. Ours would ride round on our shoulders, in pockets, and crawl over Gram. They even liked our dogs, and our dogs tolerated them.

Between 2 - 4 years. If you get 5 years out of a rat, it's rare but has been known to happen!

My Burt is now three and he is just beginning to show signs of old age, he is not as nimble on his back legs as he was and he does less climbing. However if there is food on the go, he'll be there at lightening speed, nothing is safe and I sware he hears and smells better than the dog, I think this is because he has never been able to see well. Old age has also made him cranky, he has never been one for being picked up, always protesting with load squeels, he now thinks that a good nip is a better ploy, he likes to do things on his own terms, and I would not change that.... I just wish he would stay out of the swimming pool..

Up to 3 years.
From experience they are great pets and don't tend to bite, like hamsters and gerbils!

Mine always seemed to live about 2 years, had to give up keeping them as I was too heartbroken by their early deaths. :(
