We hear so much about dog mauling because the media love to jump on the bandwagon........ For what its worth I own a kennels and cattery and I'd much rather handle a bad tempered dog than a bad tempered cat!!!!

Good point Frank. Thanks for educating people Cats can go mad and maul both children and adults, and do serious damage. In addition, their salavia is quite septic, and can, as you know, cause serious infection if not treated.
In addition, a cat's claws, especially those out killing things, can also be quite septic. I know a woman in her 40's nearly lost a hand due to an enraged kitty.
And I personally think cats will attack without any past history or provocation. Dogs, I am convinced are much more rational as a general rule.
I know an elderly (78 year old) lady with a nine year old pit bull mastif mix (about nine stone) who is one of the sweetest dogs on earth. She shares the home with another dog, a three year old pure bred Beagle that is much more likely to bite.

I think 'cat mauled person' keeps out of the paper because it would be to funny. Think about it, reading through the paper and see the headline 'Child Attacked my neighbors Fluffy house cat' Doesn't have the same ring as 'Child attacked my neighbors Doberman'...And yes it does happen, my husband was trying to hold down our cat so I could cut her nails and well she got one back leg lose and he had shorts on. Needless to say, his legs looked like ground beef for a few weeks.

I imagine it's because a cat has never mauled a child severely enough for it to be worthy of print. What can a cat do apart from inflict a few scratches?

A very interesting question. I don't think I've ever heard of a person being cat-mauled. What causes the cats to be so belligerent? Does that happen very often?

because cats only do this as a reaction to something like having it's tail pulled.

dogs can attack a child for no reason - these are the cases that are newsworthy

I don't know why this is not more widely reported. My guess would be that a cat is less likely to persist in its attack - they tend to lash out and then retreat, whereas a dog will establish a grip and refuse to let go, so more likely to do more damage.

Because cats are better, and seldom kill anyone even if they can cause ugly scratches.
