I heard that the tale has given rise to the word nightmare, where the Mara would appear at night and sit on a victims chest stopping their breathing. Similar tales appear in Hindu and buddist literature. If you know more about the subject I would appreciate knowing.

If you are talking about the Black Mare or Night Mare, then yes. It was a horse who was thought to cause bad dreams and sudden deaths. It is even called the Devil's Horse in other legends, and sometimes a puca.
