Is it really worth the $600? I am a big playstation fan, and I've read some magazine articles about it. It sounds really great, but $600 is alot of money.

For what sony spent on components for the ps3, you're really getting a system that costs sony at least $700-900 bucks to manufacture. If you have money to burn and don't want a wii or xbox 360, by all means get a ps 3.

The ps 3 comes with the new high definition dvd format known as blu-ray. It's estimated that the blu-ray dvd costs between $200-300 bucks. The ps3 also comes with a processor known as cell which has been developed by sony, ibm and toshiba. Cost of the cell processor estimated to be between $150-300 dollars.

The ps 3 sports a graphics chip made by nvidia, a leader in pc graphics. The chip is estimated to cost between $120-150 dollars.

The ps 3 uses memory known as "xdr" which is made by samsung. Estimated cost is between $65-80 dollars.

The ps 3 comes with a 20 gb hard drive on the $499 model and a 50 gb hard drive on the $599 model. Open market costs for hard drive between $50-100 dollars.

All other ps3 components such as the power supply, chasis, and wireless components go for roughly between $130-160.

If you do the math, the component costs of the ps 3 is roughly between $700-800 dollars.

Personally I think its a HUGE waste of money. And if you think $600 is bad, take a look at ebay. There are people selling them for $3000 plus, just because they got the first ones and there are going to be a limited number released in the US. My husband and I seen that and we instantly kicked ourselves in the ***. We could have gottne 3 of them if we wanted. Bought them for $1800 and then turned around and sold them for almost $10,000. What a freaking profit...... But back to the topic, I wouldn't waste the money, but thats just me. Never was a huge playstation fan, would rather have my xbox 360 (which by the way at $500 isn't much difference) and my soon to be Wii..
