256 MB DDR3 running @ 256bit is good enough. But if u want 2 play at higher resolution & with all possible eyecandies on.. then go 4 512 MB DDR3 or DDR4 with 256/512bit.
And remember ur graphics chipset is also more liable to tune games smoother. ATI X600 or Geforce 6600 is capaple 2 run modern games.. but in lower resolution & less details. For higher resolution & possible eyecandies u should go for GF7600GS or ATIx800. Now GF7950GX & ATIX1600 is available. Every thing depends on ur budget. 6600 is at 4K, 7600GS at 8.5K & 7950 at 38K.

to play ordinary games u need 128 mb atleast and 256 could be better if u r going to play the high ended graphic games that came after 2002 , use gforce graphic , nvida , or raedon graphic first make sure ur computer is compactable to it, check the compactibility of the motherboard u use,
