Its an important issue because it promotes the idea that Sodomy is not sin. Of course the Bible is very specific about this particular sin calling it abomination.

My opinion: illegal immigration is the more important issue to America. Homosexual marriage should be considered a private matter of conscience between the two parties. I think the gay marriage issue is a smokescreen to divert Americans' attention from the really serious issues like immigration and the war in Iraq. Don't be fooled!

It challenges the separation of church and state. Marriage is a communion by the church between two people that is recognized by the govt.(tax relief, medical benefits,etc,etc..) Homosexuality is looked down upon by the church therefore is not recognized by or allowed through them. The question lies in "Does the govt have the right to marry two people regardless of sexual orientation or is marriage a sanction by the church and the church alone?" I for one back the church. I do not think they should be married. That is just me and my opinion. I do believe that they should be able to get benefits just like married couples, because that is within the spectrum of governmental control.

Has Americans forgotten what makes America so wonderful? In that it is accepting of all people, and given the freedom to be who they are culturally, politically, spiritually, artistically and all else too...
Not EVERYONE is a Christian, so what the church decides may not gel well with their personal belief systems. I think what the American govt did is wonderful... giving the vote to majority opinions. Even though my personal belief is freedom for everyone to do as they feel IF it harms no one.... but the people have spoken.... Isnt that what America is all about?
The beauty of "... by the people, FOR the people..." sigh

It shouldn't be. Whether or not homosexuals should be allowed to marry or not should be up to the churches, not the Govt.

Because, despite it being right, there's so much opposition against it.
