i have windows xp proffesional ,intel pentium 1.7 ghz, 256 ram .

I'm going to guess that you have too many things running at startup that are using up your ram. I would go into the system tray by the clock in the lower right and turn off all the things that you don't need running [turn off IM programs, real audio, quicktime etc...]. Then try playing your dvds [hopefully they are orginal dvds and not copies as sometimes they don't work well in other dvd players]. Check my links below to see how to turn off things that you don't want to start up on boot up.
