I was wondering if PS3 plays HD DVDs, and normal DVDs? IF yes what resolutions do one get out of it? 1080p etc? Will the market be divided into two formats as HD DVD and Bluray?

PS3 only plays Blu-Rays discs, no HD-DVD disks. The 360 HD-DVD add-on can play HD-DVD discs, but not Blu-Ray. Sony supports Blu-Ray, but rejects HD-DVD. MS supports HD-DVD but rejects Blu-Ray. PS3 also supports the older generation formats (DVD, CD)

Toshiba is with the HD-DVD group. Toshiba does not make any Blu-Ray players, as far as I know.

HD-DVD can output 1080p through the component cables. Advantage of the HDMI is that you have 1 slot that gives both video and audio. With component cables, you still need the regular red/white or optic cables to receive audio.

The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war is very divided, and it will probably remain so for a while. Each format has its own advantages and disadvantages. I'm not going to list them all, but I'll just give the more important ones.

Blu-Ray: Larger space, up to 50 GB with a dual layer Blu-Ray. It's included in the PS3, so if the PS3 wins the console war, Blu-Ray will most likely win the war. More expensive to make because companies have to buy all new equipment in order to stamp out the Blu-Ray discs. Sony has a history of making poor choices when it comes to formats: Betamax, Mini-Disc, and UMD.

HD-DVD: Cheaper to make because the current DVD equipments can be used to make HD discs. More people are probably familiar with the HD-DVD name than the Blu-Ray name. Less storage place than the Blu-Ray.

As far as movie studios supporting the formats, it's about split even. I think Blu-Ray has more studios going with Blu-Ray, but it's very small.

PS3 has a blu-ray disc player built-in. It plays Blu-ray discs and the system is valued at one-thousand dollars. Pretty good deal because the PS3 is about five-hundred dollars?

no the PS3 has blu-ray, wich is way better than HD-DVD. the blu-ray holds twice as much capacity as an HD-DVD and is the only one that gives u 1080p resolution.

PS3 only plays Blu-ray. Advantage to Blu-ray is that it supports 1080p, I think. Though after 720 I don't think the human eye can clearly see any differences but dunno.
