Without a doubt the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers was by far the greatest college football team in history. I'm not sure how The Sporting News came up with that one but historically the '71 team could have beaten a half dozen professional teams that year. Maybe the greatest of all college football games was played that year as well when Nebraska beat Oklahoma in a classic. Oklahoma had a powerhouse that season as well. Maybe The Sporting News needs to dig alittle deeper into their vault before clowning the '95 team. They were good but certainly not the best.

The '71 Huskers is the only National Championship team in history that had an opponent's combined record being over .500. Also, they came out of the Big Eight Conference that finished 1,2 & 3 (Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado) in the final polls, something no conference has done before or since. And they demolished an Alabama team that was ranked #2 at the time in the Orange Bowl 38-6. Outside of the Game of the Century with Oklahoma (the greatest game in college football history) the closest game was several wins by 28 pts. They had 3 shutouts and only gave up double digits in points on 3 occasions. It was a team built on defense, yet had one of the most dynamic offiensive players in college football history in Johnny Rodgers. The '71 Huskers is the greatest team of all time.

They have a good argument. As was stated of their own network deal. Also basically everyone loves them or hates them, much like the Cowboys. If College Football has one then after all these years then they pretty much fit it. Although I think the Service Schools are closer to REALLY being America's team(after all they are in the service of America).

2004 Trojans
match the all time great teams against each other and with all thing being equal I'm going to take the team with the better quarterback, thats why I say the 2004 Trojans with leinart and crew beat ken dorseys hurricanes and tommy fraziers huskers, but I have not seen enought of the old teams to give a fair opinion. As far as the teams i've seen in the last 20 yrs that Trojan team was most impressive

I'd go with the '95 Huskers, who rolled up 638 points and annihilated a pretty good Florida team to win the title. Looking back at the '71 Huskers, they definitely deserve consideration.

The '01 Hurricanes.
I mean that team could not be stopped. And also look at how many draft picks come out of Miami.
