I'm interested in studying a master's in Montreal and have heard McGill is supposed to be top notch, but can someone tell me if this is true, or if it is just overrated???

McGill is the best school to study a masters in Montreal, the University of Toronto is probably the best to study at in Canada.

Unlike the US, almost all universities in Canada are good. There is more uniformity from school to school.
McGill certainly has a good 'rep'---is it over-rated? Perhaps. Just like some of the Ivy League schools in the US are 'over rated'...
For Canadian Universities, there can be a difference between them depending on what field you are focusing on.
You can be pretty much guaranteed a good education anywhere you go, so make your decision based on your specialty area and/or what kind of city or cost-of-living you want.

best for what?
a university is a collection of colleges, why do you think the word "university" is used (unity of diversity). which college would you seek a degree from?
