Nice question-well some people do this for diff. reasons. Some to stay in shape some to impress the girls, some to boost their ego. Animals on the other hand have the best gym in the world at their disposal every day. The forest is a cruel place, it allows for no mistakes and the strong survive to pass on their genes. Just go out and run for 5-8 mile at full bore during the winter in 2-3ft. of snow. You might just have a heart attack. Try running up a mountain at full throttle, Same result. It is muscle makeup that make a wolf, bear or cougar so powerful. The same goes for the ungulate family-they have to escape.

We developed a complex society that makes excessive physical exertion pointless.

Animals use their muscles and senses to fight for survival every single day of their existence. We use our brains to the same end.

All in all, from a strictly evolutionary standpoint, we're more successful.
