My Mini Cooper S CONVERTIBLE, brand new, had exactly 1/2 the insurance rate as my 6 year old hard topped Acura. Yes, it is safe. Airbags, dynamic stability control, roll bar, etc.

And that puppy is fast, take my word for it.

That said, what the guy before me said about buying a larger car holds true. I live in the Land of SUVs, the US. Many folks here don't seem to care much about gas mileage and pollution -- they think bigger is better and indulge in excess. OK, I have rejected that notion. I do so knowing that if I get in a head-on collision with an SUV or pickup, I'll die. However, I think this bigger is better nonsense has to go, and I am being a responsible citizen keeping my wants in check. So if you are looking for safest, buy an 18 wheeler to cart the kiddees to school. If you are looking for relative safety, understanding that bigger can kill, a Mini is a beautiful car.

Yes of course. It is a safe car, designed by BMW and the engines are all good. If you want to go really fast, choose the Cooper S. But with the legislations on highway (unless you live in Germany where there are no speed limits on some highways), the Cooper is enough. The Mini One is a little slow and not very well equipped.

Certainly fast enough....and really there is no such thing as a "safe" car---some are just more dangerous than others.

I love MINIS---you're biggest problem is making sure it will continue to RUN long enough to make it to the motorway....their reliability record is not sterling.

Larger cars are safer. End of story.
