You usually set the control to the median setting. Half way on the control is a good starting point and then you can adjust from there.

Get a hygrometer -- a humidity measurer -- at any garden store or home improvement store. Then, set your dehumidifier at a mid-point range. If your humidity levels are dropping below 30 percent in the winter (40 percent in the summer), then set it lower; over 40 percent in the winter (60 in the summer) then set the dehumidifier to higher levels.

But every dehumidifier and every basement is different, so you'll just have to experiment.

We keep ours at a 40% level. I believe this is an acceptable winter condition. Usually if it's higher you can see condensation forming on the windows. You don't want this, and the humidity makes the heat feel warmer, it's easier to "keep" the heat this way.

if you place an air conditoner in a basdement window it acts as a de-humidifier have it drain outside buy a de humidifier that drains directly into a drain Below i think 60 F the de-humidifier freezes
