Faulty hard drive...the seek time problem says it can't get to the data it needs in either the directory or the actual stored information.

Trust me, you don't even want to THINK about 'fixing' a hard drive. REPLACE IT.

Yes, it is necessary. Harddrive seektime is basically the average time interval between a request for data to the time of actual receiving of the requested data. This is important, especially if your laptop RAM is relatively small compared to your RAM usage, in this case, XP would use swapdisk frequently, and swapdisk is on harddisk, making your use of the laptop very slow.

Even though that you don't have small RAM, you should immediately change your harddisk, any S.M.A.R.T. warnings (S.M.A.R.T. is a technology that allows harddisk to monitor it's own health) should always be inspected, because it is the first sign of any harddisk damages, and who knows next week your harddisk won't boot up, because of some faulty components on the harddisk, and you'll have to get not just a new harddisk, but also loss of important data.

Sounds like the throughput is OK, but the high seek time suggests it's having a hard time moving the head(s) to the target location. It will likely get worse and stop working. I'd start backing up important information and shopping for hard drives. If you replace it before it totally breaks and you have the right equipment (or take it to a shop like BestBuy,CompUSA,etc) maybe they can just copy the old drive's contents bit for bit to the new one so you don't have to waste time re-installing things and copying from CDs. Ask around.

Backup everything you want to keep. Buy a new hard drive. Laptop hard drives are smaller, but you can easily purchase one from online or in stores. reinstall windows and all your other software on your new drive.

I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

Open your laptop and verify that each and everyone the cables are firmly linked on your stressful force. If that does no longer treatment the situation, replace the stressful force and reinstall your working equipment.
