In my opinion, when "Everybody Loves Raymond" went off the air in 2005, the traditional sitcom died. These days, it's trendy one-camera comedies like "Arrested Development" and "My Name is Earl" that dominate the comedic airwaves, and all the new situation comedies like "Two and a Half Men" and "The Class" are all about loud-mouthed, obnoxious 30-year-olds living in their sylish Manhattan apartments, having promiscuous sex and seeing how loud they can be. With all this going on, has the traditional sitcom - the "Everybody Loves Raymond"'s and the "Seinfeld"'s of the world - have these types of show been laid to rest? Let me know.

I feel your pain...the main concept behind what passes for sitcoms these days is that you have to be trashy to be funny. And it should be easier to make good sitcoms now, because all the subjects that couldn't even be mentioned back in the day (yeah, I'm a relic) are fair game now...even the stuff that was considered "almost over the line" on shows like Cheers, Taxi, Rosanne and One Day at a Time is considered ho-hum now. Even shows that "pushed the envelope" like All in the Family are downright tame in comparison. I may be a fossil, but give me shows that have a little wit to them like Green Acres (it's not stupid, it's surreal), Get Smart (now you can look back and see Mel Brooks' stamp on the show), Car 54 Where Are You (Toody and Muldoon are a scream), and the Beverly Hillbillies (they're not corny all the time. I mean, is there any better dialog than when Jed asks Jethro "Is the coast clear, boy?", and Jethro says "Don't know, Uncle Jed, I can't see that fer, but there ain't nobody around here." Or better yet Jed: Where'd you cut down all those logs, boy? Jethro: Over't Drysdale place. I gnawed off the stumps so's they thunk beavers done it.). We'll just have to keep looking.

I wish they would bring back the traditional sitcoms. I've never watched an episode of Survivor or any of the similar shows. They don't interest me not even a tiny bit.

I usually end up putting the History channel on or TV Land which plays some of the old sitcoms. Right now they are having a Star Trek marathon and that's fine with me.

But you are right. We need some decent shows.

It is going in cycles. presently, truth television and episodic dramas are contained in the vanguard. that is a everyday style. something succeeds, and then all the networks make a glut of similar instruct to capitalize on new popularity until eventually everybody is sick of it. The kind is then replaced with yet another presently warm kind. No television kind ever extremely dies. Even interest exhibits rebound each and every now and then from the grave. Sitcoms are really in a lull today. yet bear in mind this question. faster or later contained in the destiny, people will be asking "are there too many sitcoms now?" ;-)

My husband and I talk about this almost every time we start flipping through the tv.. apparently it just isn't "cool" to be a parent anymore unless of course you are divorced or cheating, or working all hours.. not that there's anything wrong with any of those but when did they become "normal" and an "old fashioned" family start being labeled "old fashioned!"

Hey -- Hollywood did it to itself and killed off the sitcoms with all the trash that they are putting forth. There is NOTHING at all worth watching on the Network Stations during primetime.

Maybe if enough people boycott and refuse to watch the trash being put forth, sooner or later the sponsors and networks will get the message that NO ONE WANTS The JUNK!

I agree with you, I loved those shows and last season on According To Jim, I thought they would have brought it back this season. Since we have lost good shows, It was in their best interest to leave this on the air.
