(-: A pin is something that holds something else in place. So, safety pins hold stuff in place without poking you (well, in theory!). They sure beat the stuffing out of straight pins that you use for sewing.
As for bobby pins, Wiki says that they came into use for holding "bobbed" hair in place, therefore, bobby pins. (-: Although, I used to know a boy named Robert who was very proud that people called bobby pins after him.

What do you mean 'no seriously' there is nothing funny about the question- they are called that because without that clumpy metal guard, they could poke you. If you put a normal pin in your pocket and reach in, you could poke yourself. But you could have a whole pocket of safety pins and never get cut.

because the sharp pointy end gets covered in a metal (sometimes plastic) clasp to protect you from getting stuck. i suspect you've never seen a safety pin, otherwise the answer would be obvious to you.

They are safer than normal pins because you can't be pricked/poked/stabbed/cut when it is covered.
