i'm a big fan of anime too... sa far in my collection, i have a few good choices...
Naruto seems quite good (sorry, have not finished it yet, therefore no coment given)
Amae is very funny, i finished the whole thing like 6 hours, it is about life of a monk and nuns... but what happen in the monestary is... well... speechless.... damm funny
Initial D is about illegal car racing... if you like cars and the sound of the engine you will love it! and alof of Drifting Act.
Chobits if you are into love story, it is about a presecom (human computer) and this guys actually have fall in love with his own computer that he pick from the garbage.... very nice and cute computer, no one can resists her....

The only anime I ever watched was Sailor Moon ~ there aren't any new episodes anymore, but you should be able to find it on DVD these days. I'm a sucker for girl superheroes and true love stories :)

FLCL, Fullmetal Alchemist, Trinity Blood, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, etc.... Check out Adult Swim on Saturday. That's when they air their anime block. That's a good place to start.

Azumanga Daioh is a good comedy in my mind.... Kino's Journey is one of my favorites, but it is not for everyone. Evangelion is also not for everyone.... I dont know what kind of genre is your favorite though... But I recommend those 3...
