Would your answer be different if your child was cognitively or physically disabled? Or if your spouse had a terminal illness? Or if you were not getting along with one or the other for the last 6 months...

((I'm only twelve, okay?? But i'm answering this as IF i had a family, okay?))

The kid, because it would be unfair to him/her that she/he wouldn't be able to bear and raise children of his/her own. My husband would probably understand.

I'd have to go with the child. Makes no difference if I was not getting along with someone or even if they were an enemy on whether I would save the spouse though, if I could, I would save them.

But the child comes first, they are the most vulnerable. It also makes no difference what kind of child it happened to be, it's a child. That's the only factor I would consider.

Peace.

I pray that I would never have to make such a decision.

While I hope to never find myself in this situation, the answer is without a doubt be my child. My wife and I both agreed before marriage that our children would be foremost in our lives, above and beyond our personal lives and well-being. I would not hesitate to brave the dangers for my daughter, and I know my wife would do the same. While it would be excruciating to know that my wife would perish, I would find solace in the fact that we both agreed that the children's lives are more valuable than our own, and I would hope to find some comfort in knowing that she expected me to do just what I did, and that she would have done the same if she were faced with the same decision.

Since I'm already long-winded, I would like to urge all parents to form a disaster plan for their family. Whether it be fire, natural disaster, or any other catastrophic event you can think of, your whole family will be safer by simply knowing what to do in a disastrous situation. Calm evacuation beats paniced frenzy any day...

I think everyone would say child because your more tied to the child since part of it is you. The question should be if its your step child would you save them that would have more varying answers. I think that i would save my child even if it was disabled but some people might not because they are mad at their child for being that way.

No one likes to think about these questions, and really no one knows how they will react until the disaster strikes.

But in my mind,

I would save my child/children first. Its instinct, animal/maternal.

The "if" factors would not make any difference.

*I hope my husband would do the same and save my children before myself.

What a terrible thing to have to do...I pray that I never have to go through anything like this but if we had a child I am sure he would want me to save our child first, the child is helpless where he can fend for himself better as an adult but as soon as I got my child to safety if he wasn't out with us I sure as hell would go back in and save him too and if we die...well at least we died together, hopefully in each others arms. I know our families would take care of our child for us.

I would save my child and I am certain that my spouse would agree with that decision. My answer would not be different under any of the described circumstances.

Child, because it is my job as a parent to take care of and protect my child. And no, the things you mentioned would not change my answer. :) But I would prefer not to have to make that kind of choice.

The child should always be first. A parents natural instinct would be to go for their child.
