The duties will naturally vary from school to school and you should be given a duty statement upon employment. However you need to be able to address the following criteria to be employed at the school where I work.
Experience in providing an effective customer service. Experience in providing general office administrative support.
Ability to use computers and a range of application software packages, particularly databases, spreadsheets and word processing
Verbal and written communication skills — the ability to express information and ideas clearly both verbally and in writing.
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
Now if you haven't go experience specifically in this field look at what you have been doing and see where you can fit it into an application or covering letter. The key to working in a school is flexibility and prioritizing because you are the first person the person entering the school sees, you may be on the phone, attending to a sick student and your general duties like newsletters, daily notices etc still need to be done. You also need to be able to get along with people working under pressure like stressed out teachers, irate parents and Principals who want everything to run smoothly and be done yesterday.
